The CHRO Global Leadership Board is composed of chief human resources officers (CHROs) from the world’s top companies. Their purpose is to lead a global, collaborative movement of CHROs committed to elevating the future of the HR function. CEO Succession

CEO succession is arguably the most important activity a CHRO can participate in. That said, Gartner research indicates that only 40% of board members are confident that their current plan is providing good candidates. Even fewer (27% of board members) agree that they have a detailed support plan for the CEO’s first 90 days on the job. There is a clear opportunity for HR leaders to positively impact the CEO succession planning process.

CHROs must understand the crucial role they play in all aspects of the CEO succession process — from identifying successor criteria to managing the outgoing CEO. To work smarter rather than harder, heads of HR should understand and implement lessons learned from other CHROs who have been through the CEO succession process.

Recently retired Board members will step down from their roles and move to the Emeritus group, led by Marcia Morales-Jaffe, former SVP and People Officer of Paypal. The goal of the Emeritus group is to be a force multiplier for the Board. Emeritus members may, for example, attend industry events to share the work of the Board, and review or even help create deliverables.

Mentee Program

To better anticipate for the future of HR, the CHRO Board has pioneered a Mentee program to involve the next generation of HR leaders. Each Board member can select a mentee at their organization who has the ambition to progress to a CHRO role in the future. The Board serves as a platform to help promising HR executives heighten their visibility and development.
