YOUR CHECKLIST

bullet Assemble an essential supply kit (to include items listed below.)
bullet Arrange for someone to check on you.
bullet Find a safe place in your home.
bullet Stay calm and take responsibility.
bullet Develop a potential list of available services particularly cool shelters, possible utility and weatherization relief.
bullet Monitor local weather to forecast potential heat wave information.
bullet Plan for transportation if you need it.
 

 

ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES

bullet Battery powered radio & flashlight with extra batteries for each.
bullet First Aid kit
bullet Battery operated lamps, fans
bullet Water
bullet Ice Chest
bullet Manual Can Opener
bullet Blue ice packs (3 to 4)

 

 

FOOD

bullet Use and rotate ready to eat meats, fruits, vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, crackers, trail mix, instant coffee, tea, juices and bottled water.

COOKING

Charcoal, gas grill, camp stoves are the most obvious alternative sources of heat for cooking. NEVER USE THEM INDOORS. You risk both asphyxiation from carbon monoxide and the chance of starting a fire that could destroy your home.

 

 

ICE CHEST

bullet Refrain from continually opening refrigerator and freezer doors
bullet An ice chest can be used to store foods for infants, elderly persons or persons on special diets for short periods of time.
bullet Insulin or other medication requiring refrigeration could also be stored for short periods of time. (Consult with physician before storing in a cooler.)
 

 

MEDICAL NEEDS

bullet Extra wheelchair batteries, oxygen.
bullet Medical cards.
bullet Prescription medications, list of medications including dosage, list of any allergies.
bullet List other medical devices powered by electricity and determine if you will require any special help.
bullet Consult physicians about medications requiring refrigeration.
bullet Consult pediatrician and or physician about infant formula and other infant medical needs.
